Professional Advancement Policy
All teachers at Laurentian Hills Christian School will participate in the equivalent of one-week/5 days/30 hours of professional development per year. Part time staff is required to do the equivalent of their part time status (50 % does .5 w, 2.5 d, or 15 h)
All teachers are encouraged to maintain a professional growth portfolio. An excellent example is the OCSTA document "Professional Growth Portfolio".
All staff will participate in the study of a research topic or a book as determined by administrator in consultation with the staff.
The Principal or his/her designate will approve all requests for professional development funding.
Laurentian Hills Christian School will set aside 1.5% of its annual staffing budget for approved staff development activities.
The administrator or his/her designate shall ensure that professional development meets the needs of both the school and teacher.
The administrator or his/her designate shall report monthly to the Education Committee on all professional development activities.
The teacher shall provide the administrator or his/her designate with proof of successful completion of the professional development activity.
A beginning or first year teacher will be reimbursed for an approved professional development activity according to the provisions of paragraphs 4, 11 and 12.
The teacher shall have no professional development obligations during the summer following the termination of employment with the school.
The Board shall pay to or on behalf of the teacher costs for tuition for professional development taken and approved by the principal or his/her designate.
Expenses such as lodging, travel, and other related costs incurred by the teacher may be reimbursed up to one half the cost of the professional development activity.
The teacher shall not be entitled to remuneration if the professional development activity places them in a higher pay category.
