Anaphylaxis – What is it?
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can lead to death if untreated. Those who live with this condition may be severely allergic to any common substance, which the general population uses or deals with everyday: tree nuts, peanuts, latex, insect bites/stings, shellfish, eggs, dairy, etc. Anaphylaxis can strike anyone at any age. In less severe allergic reactions, anaphylaxis occurs when the body’s immune system reacts to harmless substances as though they were harmful invaders. Instead of developing the familiar runny nose or rash, anaphylaxis sufferers respond with an extreme body reaction. This may begin with itching, hives, vomiting, diarrhea or swelling of the lips or face. Within moments, the throat may begin to close, choking off breathing and leading to unconsciousness and death. An anaphylactic reaction can begin within seconds of exposure or after several hours.
Peanut butter and other peanut/nut products will be banned from the whole school.
It is the responsibility of the parents of children with anaphylaxis to inform the school principal of their child’s allergy.
All staff members need to be made aware of the children with anaphylaxis.
No food except fruit and vegetables is to be eaten in the hallways or on the playground.
Parents, students and staff will be periodically educated/reminded of the anaphylactic allergy.
The family will provide the school with necessary EpiPens®.
To manage an emergency the staff must practice treatment routine annually.
It is important to make everyone involved in the school day aware of the life-threatening allergy, so that all may help in any way to prevent a tragedy from occurring.
Signs will be posted.
